Respect The Anointing

Honor and The Anointing

2 Corinthians 5:16(NLT) - So we have stopped evaluating others from a human point of view. At one time we thought of Christ merely from a human point of view. How differently we know him now!

He's just a man! He puts on his pants one leg at a time just like the rest of us. What makes him so special? I grew up with her. Now she's talking like she hears from God all the time? I hear from God too. What's the big deal with this anointing thing anyway? We all have the anointing. I don't honor men. I only honor God.

This is Part Five of our series on The Anointing. It's a continuation from Part Four - "What Does God's Voice Sound Like?". Many of us in The Church refer to The Anointing quite often but don't fully understand it. In this blog series we will search the scriptures for some clarity.

Mark 6:1-6(NLT) - Jesus left that part of the country and returned with his disciples to Nazareth, his hometown. The next Sabbath he began teaching in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed. They asked, “Where did he get all this wisdom and the power to perform such miracles?” Then they scoffed, “He’s just a carpenter, the son of Mary and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas, and Simon. And his sisters live right here among us.” They were deeply offended and refused to believe in him. Then Jesus told them, “A prophet is honored everywhere except in his own hometown and among his relatives and his own family.” And because of their unbelief, he couldn’t do any miracles among them except to place his hands on a few sick people and heal them. And he was amazed at their unbelief.

Respect The Anointing

Unbelief destroyed the power of The Anointing in the lives of the people to whom Jesus ministered in Mark 6:1-6. The Bible is clear. He could not do any miracles among them except healing a few sick people because of their unbelief. It didn't say He would not. He could not. They were too familiar. They were too disrespectful. They cut off the miracle working power of God in the flesh. So if that happened to Jesus where does that leave the rest of us?

The Anointing flows from the minister to the people being ministered to. If you've been following this series all week you will understand the responsibility of the minister to walk in The Anointing. However, even in the presence of a true anointing, a lack of honor in those receiving the ministry will negate its power.

2 Chronicles 20:20(KJV) - And they rose early in the morning, and went forth into the wilderness of Tekoa: and as they went forth, Jehoshaphat stood and said, Hear me, O Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem; Believe in the LORD your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper.

Respect The Anointing

I know it's a struggle to honor those whom God has anointed. Do you want to know why? Because we judge people according to the flesh. We size them up with our eyes and determine whether or not they deserve our respect. 2 Corinthians 5:16 is so clear. Do not evaluate people from a human point of view. You will get it all wrong. Judge by The Spirit.

Hence, if you are going to benefit from The Anointing you have to respect The Anointing. You don't have to get caught up in the person ministering. Put your focus on God. It's not about the person anyway. It's about The Anointing that's on the person as a result of the presence of The Holy Spirit. God will deliver by the power of His Holy Spirit.

Psalm 105:14-15(KJV) - He suffered no man to do them wrong: yea, he reproved kings for their sakes; Saying, Touch not mine anointed, and do my prophets no harm.

That's all for today. Look out this evening for this weekend's teaching video.

What Does God's Voice Sound Like?

Anointed Words

1 Peter 4:10-11(NLT) - God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another. Do you have the gift of speaking? Then speak as though God himself were speaking through you. Do you have the gift of helping others? Do it with all the strength and energy that God supplies. Then everything you do will bring glory to God through Jesus Christ. All glory and power to him forever and ever! Amen.

"When you speak under My Anointing people stop hearing your voice and start hearing Mine!" - God

This is Part Four of our series on The Anointing. It's a continuation from Part Three - "Unmasking The Anointing". Many of us in The Church refer to The Anointing quite often but don't fully understand it. So in this blog series we will search the scriptures for some clarity.

The Bible gives several accounts which describe God's Voice. In Job 37:5 He sounds like thunder. In Revelation 1:10 He sounds like a trumpet. In Revelation 1:15 He sounds like many waters. That's great but what's even better is when you speak under God's Anointing He sounds like you.

John 12:49(NLT) - I don’t speak on my own authority. The Father who sent me has commanded me what to say and how to say it.

Operating in The Anointing

"Say only what God says then sit down." - Nathan

That is some of the best advice I have ever received in my life. It sounds really simple but it's easier said than done. When God starts speaking through you never embellish it with ideas of your own. You will only corrupt it. Just say what He says then sit down.

Jeremiah 1:9(KJV) - Then the LORD put forth his hand, and touched my mouth. And the LORD said unto me, Behold, I have put my words in thy mouth.

Isaiah 50:4(KJV) - The Lord GOD hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: he wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned.

Let God put His words in your mouth today. Someone in your life really needs to hear from Him.

Unmasking The Anointing

Unmasking The Anointing

2 Timothy 4:3-4(NLT) - For a time is coming when people will no longer listen to sound and wholesome teaching. They will follow their own desires and will look for teachers who will tell them whatever their itching ears want to hear. They will reject the truth and chase after myths.

The organ is blaring. The crowd is on its feet. People are clapping. People are shouting. Suddenly, one sister can't contain her excitement anymore so she takes off running. That sets the crowd on fire. The atmosphere is electric.

The preacher says,"Let The Church say amen! AMEN! I said, let me hear an amen! AMEN! If you're with me let me hear you say yeah! YEAAAAAH! Say yeah! YEAAAAH!"

His armor bearer shouts, "You better preach!" Discreetly, one of the visitors turns to his wife and says, "Baby, he sure can preach, can't he?" She smiles and whispers in his ear, "Yes dear, but is he anointed?"

Unmasking The Anointing

This is Part Three of our new series on The Anointing. It's a continuation from Part Two - "Wait on The Anointing". Many of us in The Church refer to The Anointing quite often but don't fully understand it. So in this blog series we will search the scriptures for some clarity.

1 John 4:1(NLT) - Dear friends, do not believe everyone who claims to speak by the Spirit. You must test them to see if the spirit they have comes from God. For there are many false prophets in the world.

The Church is full of all types of interesting characters. Some are genuinely anointed of The Lord while others are not. Also, many times we underestimate people who walk in a powerful anointing and overestimate others who are merely gifted in their particular area of ministry. Because a man can sing, preach, dance or play an instrument does not mean the residue of The Holy Spirit rests upon him. It could just mean that he is naturally gifted. God may have given him the gift and that's about it.

1 Corinthians 12:7-11(KJV) - But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.

As we've been saying for the last few days, The Anointing is the result of The Holy Spirit resting upon someone's life. As a result, when you see The Anointing in action, you see The Holy Spirit. So to recognize The Anointing you just need to recognize the presence of The Holy Spirit. That can be interpreted in many ways. On a deeply spiritual level, The Holy Spirit inside of you will recognize The Holy Spirit inside of someone else. Hence, you can discern whether The Holy Spirit is moving through someone or not. However, everyone's not that deep so let's make it really simple.

Unmasking The Anointing

Isaiah 10:27(KJV) - And it shall come to pass in that day, that his burden shall be taken away from off thy shoulder, and his yoke from off thy neck, and the yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing.

2 Corinthians 3:17(KJV) - Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.

One of the most obvious signs of The Anointing is the liberty that it brings. A natural gift can move you emotionally or even blow your mind but only The Anointing can set you free. It's the residue of The Holy Spirit which destroys yokes that have you bound. It's The Spirit of The Lord who breaks the hold of the enemy on your life. It's The Anointing which delivers you from bondage. It's the "chrism" of God which can set you free and keep you free.

Psalm 16:11(KJV) - Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.

Nehemiah 8:10(KJV) - Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our LORD: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the LORD is your strength.

Unmasking The Anointing

Another sign of The Anointing is that it strengthens your inner man. In God's presence is the fullness of joy. This is not merely a temporary feeling of natural happiness because you don't need God's presence to be happy. Winning a hundred million dollars in the lottery can make you happy. What you get in God's presence is The Joy of The Lord. This joy strengthens you from deep within. When someone ministers under the power of The Anointing it builds you up from the inside. You might walk into the room worn out and fatigued but when you encounter The Anointing you get the strength to move on.

Luke 24:31-32(NKJV) - Then their eyes were opened and they knew Him; and He vanished from their sight. And they said to one another, “Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?”

John 6:63(NKJV) - It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.

Hebrews 4:12(NKJV) - For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

A third sign of The Anointing is what it does to your heart. When Jesus Christ, The Anointed One, spoke to some men on the road to Emmaus in Luke 24 His words burned in their hearts. Anointed words are Spirit Words. They expose your heart! They have power! If you walk into a place where The Anointing is flowing you're inspired to go deeper in God and if you're in sin you will be convicted.

The Anointing inspires you to be a better Christian by cutting to your heart. When you hear or see someone operate under The Anointing it penetrates your heart. It moves you toward God. Also, there is no way you can be walking in sin and not be convicted by The Holy Spirit. So when you're in His presence expect to feel extremely uncomfortable with your sin. Once you sense what's going on, go ahead and repent because He won't relent. The Anointing leads you to get your life right with The Lord. It pushes you higher in Him.

Unmasking The Anointing

You cannot deny when you're in the presence of The Anointing because you cannot deny when you're in the presence of The Holy Spirit. The Anointing changes you. You cannot walk out the same way you walked in. If you're moved emotionally but you walked in messed up and walked back out messed up you may just have encountered an awesome natural gift. Gifted people can temporarily sway your emotions by an unusual display of skill or a moving performance.

Only The Anointing gives you lasting change. When your burden is taken away and your yoke is destroyed you just encountered The Anointing. When your spirit man is strengthened and you are empowered to move forward in the things of The Lord you just encountered The Anointing. If you're bound, weak, broken and struggling in sin it sets you free, gives you strength, heals you and helps you to walk right. There's no denying it!

Luke 4:17-21(KJV) - And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him. And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.

The Anointing has been unmasked! We'll continue from here tomorrow.

Wait on The Anointing

Tapping Into The Anointing

Acts 10:38(NKJV) - How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.

Luke 3:21-22(NKJV) - When all the people were baptized, it came to pass that Jesus also was baptized; and while He prayed, the heaven was opened. And the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from heaven which said, “You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.”

Jesus Christ is The Anointed One! Hence, we can't have a study of The Anointing and not spend significant time on the life of Jesus. Do you know that The Anointing doesn't just creep up on an individual? There is a specific moment in time when someone receives The Anointing. In The Old Testament this moment was many times signified by the application of oil. However, even though the process changed in The New Testament the moment still remained.

This is Part Two of our new series on The Anointing. It's a continuation from Part One - "The Heart of The Anointing". Many of us in The Church refer to The Anointing quite often but don't fully understand it. So in this blog series we will search the scriptures for some clarity.

In Luke 3:21-22 something fascinating happened. When Jesus came out of the water after His baptism The Spirit of The Lord rested upon Him. With that, He received The Anointing to carry out God's Will on the earth. Something changed in His life from that instant. How can we be so sure? Let's follow the story.

Tapping Into The Anointing

Luke 4:1(NKJV) - Then Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,

The next time we see Jesus following His baptism He is described as being filled with The Holy Spirit. Also, The Spirit leads him to the wilderness where He fasts for forty days and is tempted of the devil. After He puts a "beat-down" on the devil the next time we see Jesus He confirms exactly what we suspect. Something special happened at His baptism. He received The Anointing!

Luke 4:14-21(NKJV) - Then Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and news of Him went out through all the surrounding region. 15 And He taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all. 16 So He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read. 17 And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written: 18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed; 19 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.” 20 Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him. 21 And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”

Do you know that Jesus didn't start His public ministry until He was anointed at His baptism? It was The Anointing He received which empowered Him to turn the world upside down in three years. Jesus did not step out on His own into the ministry. He waited for The Holy Spirit to rest upon Him. Just like David was baptized in oil in 1 Samuel 16:12-13 before The Spirit of The Lord came upon Him Jesus was baptized in The River Jordan.

Wait on The Anointing

After three years of anointed ministry it was time for Jesus to return to heaven. However, He continued the pattern by giving His disciples some specific instructions which would result in them receiving a baptism of their own. It was at that baptism that they also received The Anointing!

Luke 24:49(NKJV) - Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.”

Acts 1:8-9(NKJV) - But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight.

Jesus was clear. He told His disciples to follow His example. They were not to make a move until The Holy Spirit came upon them. There were things they would be able to do after they received The Anointing that they could not do before.

This is an important lesson for all of us. Do not step out to do anything for The Lord until you are anointed to do so. There is a specific moment in time when The Holy Spirit will rest upon you for a specific task. From that moment on you will be able to do what was impossible before.

If you step out before your time you will be like Moses the first time he tried to save Israel in Exodus 2. He ended up killing a man and getting run out of Egypt. However, in Exodus 3&4 God anointed him and sent him back to Egypt. What he could not do in his own power in Exodus 2 became a smashing success after he received The Anointing.

Romans 10:15(NKJV) - And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, Who bring glad tidings of good things!”

In the words of a prominent Atlanta pastor, "Are you a sent one or a went one?" Wait on The Anointing! We'll continue from here tomorrow.

The Heart of The Anointing

The Heart of The Anointing

1 Samuel 16:6-7,12-13(KJV) -When they arrived, Samuel took one look at Eliab and thought, “Surely this is the LORD’s anointed!” But the LORD said to Samuel, “Don’t judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The LORD doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”..... So Jesse sent for him. He was dark and handsome, with beautiful eyes. And the LORD said, “This is the one; anoint him.” So as David stood there among his brothers, Samuel took the flask of olive oil he had brought and anointed David with the oil. And the Spirit of the LORD came powerfully upon David from that day on. Then Samuel returned to Ramah.

What does it mean to be anointed by God? Is it the same thing as being gifted? Have you ever thought about that? I have. In fact, there was a season in my life when I was totally confused about it. I once heard a popular gospel artiste introduced on a live CD recording as one of the most anointed men in all of gospel music. Immediately, The Lord told me that there is a difference between operating in a powerful gift and walking in a powerful anointing.

God said that the gospel artiste in question was indeed gifted but sometimes people confused that with the anointing on his life. Several years later he was in the middle of a major scandal after admitting his choice to pursue a homosexual lifestyle. He still continued to produce music of the same quality but his impact was lost. As The Lord said, he was still gifted but he was no longer anointed.

Romans 11:29(NLT) - For God’s gifts and his call can never be withdrawn.

The Greek word used here for gifts is cavrisma which means; a favour with which one receives without any merit of his own; grace or gifts denoting extraordinary powers, distinguishing certain Christians and enabling them to serve the church of Christ, the reception of which is due to the power of divine grace operating on their souls by the Holy Spirit.

God's gifts and His call are given without any regard for a person's character. Regardless of your relationship with God you already have specific gifts that enable you to fulfill His purpose for your life. However, what you do with those gifts is your choice. Like many people do right now, you can abuse God-given gifts and use them to do whatever you want to do.

You were born with those gifts and if necessary, you will die with them. You can live in sin and go to hell with those gifts. Why? You are gifted in spite of your character. You don't qualify for gifts. They are freely given by God to whomever He chooses. They will never be withdrawn. So the presence or absence of gifts cannot be a reflection of one's relationship with God. On the other hand, the anointing is completely different.

1 John 2:27(KJV) - But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.

So what is the anointing?

The Greek word used here is chrisma (khris'-mah) which means an unguent or smearing, i.e. (figuratively) the special endowment ("chrism") of the Holy Spirit:

The Heart of The Anointing

The anointing is not something God gives to men like a gift. It's the residue of The Holy Spirit when He rests upon someone. In 1 Samuel 16:12-13, immediately after Samuel anointed David something specific happened. The Holy Spirit rested upon him. The oil itself meant nothing. It wasn't about the oil. It was about The Spirit of The Lord resting on the man whom God told the prophet to smear with the oil. Hence, the oil was just a sign that represented God's choice for His Spirit.

In 1 John 2:27 those who are anointed are instructed to abide in God. Pay close attention to that because there is something important there.

People have to qualify for the anointing. In 1 Samuel 16:6-7 God made it clear to Samuel that there was one specific criterion He used for awarding the anointing. He looked at a man's heart. Unlike His free distribution of gifts He did not take lightly the character of the person upon whom would receive His anointing. How can I be so sure? The same way God gave His anointing to men who qualified, He took it away from those who did not. If the anointing was the same as gifts, The Bible would contradict itself. Gifts are given without repentance. The anointing is given and is taken away.

The Heart of The Anointing

1 Samuel 15:1, 10-11, 20-23(NLT) - One day Samuel said to Saul, “It was the LORD who told me to anoint you as king of his people, Israel. Now listen to this message from the LORD!... Then the LORD said to Samuel, “I am sorry that I ever made Saul king, for he has not been loyal to me and has refused to obey my command.” Samuel was so deeply moved when he heard this that he cried out to the LORD all night....But Samuel replied, “What is more pleasing to the LORD: your burnt offerings and sacrifices or your obedience to his voice? Listen! Obedience is better than sacrifice, and submission is better than offering the fat of rams. Rebellion is as sinful as witchcraft, and stubbornness as bad as worshiping idols. So because you have rejected the command of the LORD, he has rejected you as king.”

1 Samuel 16:1,14 (NLT) - Now the LORD said to Samuel, “You have mourned long enough for Saul. I have rejected him as king of Israel, so fill your flask with olive oil and go to Bethlehem. Find a man named Jesse who lives there, for I have selected one of his sons to be my king.”.... Now the Spirit of the LORD had left Saul, and the LORD sent a tormenting spirit that filled him with depression and fear.

Do you know that at one time Saul was God's anointed? Do you also know that the time came when he no longer qualified to be God's anointed? When Saul's character fell below God's standard God took His Spirit off of Saul and with it went the anointing to be king. This is a deeply personal message because I've seen this happen. God's gifts are free and are ours to keep but His anointing comes with a very high price. It's a privilege to be God's anointed. It's not something to be taken lightly.

Do you have the heart for The Anointing? Think about that today. We'll continue from here tomorrow.
