The Spirit Of Counsel

Today's blog is an excerpt from my book, "The Mysterious Kingdom of Heaven".
The Hebrew word used for counsel here is `etsah which means advice. Hence, The Bible isolates The Spirit of Counsel to emphasize that The Holy Spirit can enable a human being to be proficient at giving good advice. The writer separated good advice from wisdom and understanding not because they exist apart from each other but to expose its distinct value. It's great to have insight and the capability to do something with it but nobody can deny the importance of giving good counsel.
Exodus 18:13-22(NLT) - The next day, Moses took his seat to hear the people's disputes against each other. They waited before him from morning till evening. When Moses' father-in-law saw all that Moses was doing for the people, he asked, "What are you really accomplishing here? Why are you trying to do all this alone while everyone stands around you from morning till evening?" Moses replied, "Because the people come to me to get a ruling from God. When a dispute arises, they come to me, and I am the one who settles the case between the quarreling parties. I inform the people of God's decrees and give them his instructions." "This is not good!" Moses' father-in-law exclaimed. "You're going to wear yourself out—and the people, too. This job is too heavy a burden for you to handle all by yourself. Now listen to me, and let me give you a word of advice, and may God be with you. You should continue to be the people's representative before God, bringing their disputes to him. Teach them God's decrees, and give them his instructions. Show them how to conduct their lives. But select from all the people some capable, honest men who fear God and hate bribes. Appoint them as leaders over groups of one thousand, one hundred, fifty, and ten.
By the Law of First Mention, since this passage is the first time the root word for counsel appears in The Bible, it would be a strong indication of its expected use. Moses' father-in-law gave him some good advice which was sure to reduce the stress on his life. From all indications, he had Moses' best interest at heart and he spoke the truth in love like The Apostle Paul said in Ephesians 4:15. His advice was well received as we can see in Exodus 18:24(NLT); "Moses listened to his father-in-law's advice and followed his suggestions." This is the pattern that we can continue by the power of The Spirit of Counsel.
Psalms 1:1(NKJV) - Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful;
I once published a blog on my website called, “Beware of that ungodly advice!” As much as the scriptures emphasize the worth of good counsel, it warns against that which comes from the ungodly. The first sentence of the biggest book in The Bible makes it clear that the man who refuses the counsel of the ungodly is blessed. So it's assumed that the reverse is also true. The man who takes ungodly advice is cursed. It sounds like a harsh thing to say but it's The Word of God.
1 Corinthians 2:14-15(NKJV) - But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. But he who is spiritual judges all things, yet he himself is rightly judged by no one.
The Spirit of Counsel separates a natural man from one who is spiritual. Even the best advice from a natural man is still natural. As a result, it will always be limited. The most brilliant secular scholar can only judge by his senses. He can then draw the best conclusions possible based on the information available to Him. On the other hand, the spiritual man has no such limits. He can see what cannot be seen and understand what is not discernible. Hence, he can give effective advice to others.
Proverbs 11:14(NKJV) - Where there is no counsel, the people fall; But in the multitude of counselors there is safety.
Proverbs 12:15(NKJV) - The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, But he who heeds counsel is wise.
The Bible can only be properly understood when scriptures are balanced by each other. Now that we've established its position on ungodly advice, we can consider what it has to say about counsel, in general. People fall where there is no Godly counsel and there is safety in a multitude of Godly counselors. He who heeds Godly counsel is wise. A specific illustration of this is seen in the field of professional counseling. One of my best friends is a licensed counselor in the US State of Georgia and shared with me some of the challenges of her most frustrating cases.
When she worked for a Christian agency she was given the liberty to tap into Godly principles including prayer and the use of direct scriptural references. That way, when her professional training was not enough, her spiritual training guided her to success with difficult clients. However, when she worked for a secular agency she had no such freedom. They operated by a strict code of ethics which limited her to the methods widely accepted in her field. Many times they worked but many times they didn't. Hence, as a counselor in the latter situation, there was only so much she could do with certain cases before she became ineffective.
Amazingly, in some of those cases, without sharing any sensitive or detailed information with me, I've been able to advise her. Even though I don't have her professional training, because The Holy Spirit lives in me, I speak by the inspiration of The Spirit of Counsel. When she combined her professional experience with Godly advice, she saw progress with her clients. Therefore, I'm an advocate for Christian counseling. I do respect the professional opinions of secular experts but I only have an assurance of consistent success when I do what The Lord says.
