Worry Changes Nothing; Prayer Changes Everything!

Worry Changes Nothing; Prayer Changes Everything!

Today's blog is a continuation from yesterday's; "Don't Waste Today Worrying About Tomorrow!"

Philippians 4:6-7(NKJV) - Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

In Matthew 6, Jesus made it clear that worrying is not an option for His children. Since that's perhaps the most natural response anyone can have in a hopeless situation, what then are we supposed to do? The Apostle Paul provided the perfect antidote to worry or anxiety and it's prayer, supplication and thanksgiving. In other words, your response in trouble should be threefold;

1) Prayer: Bring Your Situation Before God

Luke 18:1-8(NLT) - One day Jesus told his disciples a story to show that they should always pray and never give up. "There was a judge in a certain city," he said, "who neither feared God nor cared about people. A widow of that city came to him repeatedly, saying, 'Give me justice in this dispute with my enemy.' The judge ignored her for a while, but finally he said to himself, 'I don't fear God or care about people, but this woman is driving me crazy. I'm going to see that she gets justice, because she is wearing me out with her constant requests!'" Then the Lord said, "Learn a lesson from this unjust judge. Even he rendered a just decision in the end. So don't you think God will surely give justice to his chosen people who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? I tell you, he will grant justice to them quickly! But when the Son of Man returns, how many will he find on the earth who have faith?"

Jesus told this true story to His disciples to reinforce the importance of prayer. This widow was in a bad situation but instead of worrying about it, she went directly to the judge for a resolution. That's how He expects us to deal with our issues. If you have a problem don't complain about it, don't talk to people about it, don't worry about it. Go to The Lord in prayer and get Him involved.

2) Supplication: Ask Him for exactly what you want.

Matthew 7:7-8(NKJV) - "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.

Since God is Sovereign which means He can do whatever He chooses and God is omniscient which means He knows everything why do we need to pray? He'll do what He wants to do anyway and He already knows my situation. So why do we pray? It's simple. We pray because He said so! If you have a need, knock on the door of His heart and ask Him for His help. He wants to act in your favor but He wants to hear you ask Him to get involved.

3) Thanksgiving: Worship Him

John 9:31(NLT) - We know that God doesn't listen to sinners, but he is ready to hear those who worship him and do his will.

In Philippians 4:6, the Greek word translated into "thanksgiving" can also be translated into "gratitude; as an act of worship." In other words, when you make a request known to God be sure to do it from a posture of worship. Why? The answer is in John 9:31. God hears those who worship Him and do His Will. In other words, if you want God to hear you when you pray be sure to worship Him.

Philippians 4:6-7(NKJV) - Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

When you respond to every situation you face with prayer, supplication and thanksgiving what happens? God responds with supernatural peace. Pay close attention to that. It doesn't say He changes your situation immediately. It says He gives you peace right where you are. This type of peace passes all understanding. In other words, it's not always logical or natural for you to have peace in the midst of a situation that should cause you worry but that's what happens when you present it to The Lord. He will put up a wall of peace through Christ Jesus to protect your heart and mind from worry.

Don't Waste Today Worrying About Tomorrow!

Don't Waste Today Worrying About Tomorrow

The blog is back. For a while I've been thinking about writing again but I finally sat down and made it happen. The Lord's been saying a whole lot since we started The Body Church and because we have the church, we just share it there. However, there are some things that He says during the week that are not necessarily just for our church family in Atlanta so instead of waiting for Sunday morning we'll just share it here. Consider this your invitation to join us on our journey with The Lord. Now that the pleasantries are over, onward with today's blog.

Matthew 6:34(NKJV) - Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

As I thought through what God wanted to share with us in this first blog He said, "Don't waste today worrying about tomorrow." Every day is precious and not one should be taken for granted. Many of us spend an inordinate amount of time and emotional energy looking ahead instead of making the most of what's right before our eyes. Some of us worry about the future and suffer from anxiety attacks over the "what ifs".

What if things don't work out in our marriage? What if I get fired from my job? What if the economy crashes? What if the oil price goes back up? What if I get sick and can't afford the treatment? What if we lose the house? What if nobody buys our product? What if nobody shows up to my event? What if I lose my investment? What if there's another terrorist attack? What if this happens tomorrow? What if that happens tomorrow? Jesus instructed us to never worry about tomorrow but deal with today's issues today then when tomorrow comes we can deal with with tomorrow's issues then.

Matthew 6:27-33(NKJV) - Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature? "So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? "Therefore do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

So why did Jesus make such a big deal about worrying? Any thoughts? Look at Matthew 6:27 above and then think about it. Have you ever worried yourself out of a problem or has worry ever been the solution that led you out of a bad situation? Jesus instructed us not to worry because worrying makes nothing better and many times, only makes things worse. If you don't like a situation and you can do something about it, then do it. If you can't do anything about it put it in God's hands and trust that He would do something. Regardless, don't worry about it because that's a complete waste of your time and energy.

So if God doesn't want you to worry what does He expect you to do when you feel completely helpless? Find out tomorrow.
