God Speaks Through Storms

God Speaks Through Storms

He answered and said to them, “When it is evening you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red’; and in the morning, ‘It will be foul weather today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ Hypocrites! You know how to discern the face of the sky, but you cannot discern the signs of the times. - Matthew 16:2-3(NKJV)

God uses storms of different types to communicate with people. My wife and I have this inside joke which is not funny at all. Whenever something unusual or completely out of the ordinary happens in a situation we say there’s a “glitch in the Matrix”. If you never saw the movie; The Matrix, let me explain. A “glitch in the Matrix” is a sign that something is wrong and it’s your last warning sign before the situation takes a sudden turn for the worse. Anytime we notice a glitch, we immediately increase our level of alertness because we don’t want to be complacent when God allows us to see warning signs.

Jonah was a prophet of God who was given an assignment to prophesy against Nineveh that he clearly understood. Instead of doing what God said, he went in the opposite direction and boarded a ship to Tarshish. Soon after, he encountered a “glitch in the Matrix” when an unusual wind hit the sea and they faced a storm like they never had before in their lives. God used the storm to speak to Jonah in a way that could not be denied. With every howling wind and violent wave, Jonah could hear God repeatedly saying to him; “I said go to Nineveh”. What we learn from Jonah’s example is that God doesn’t just speak in a storm, He speaks through storms.
