Follow the Signs

Follow the Signs

“Ask a sign for yourself from the Lord your God; ask it either in the depth or in the height above.” - Isaiah 7:11(NKJV)

While driving to an event after church with my wife, Angel, The Lord spoke to me. I saw a sign on the expressway that said all lanes were blocked at an intersection up ahead due to a serious accident. Still, the flow of traffic looked normal at the time and my GPS directed me to continue as normal. Thus, I didn’t attempt to get off at the next exit and kept going. Then I saw another sign saying the same thing again concerning all lanes being blocked due to an accident up ahead. I looked around and the traffic flow continued to be normal as far ahead as I could see. Additionally, my GPS did not change its directions.

While I approached the next exit, I had a decision to make. I could get off at the exit out of an abundance of caution and let the GPS guide me through backroads or I could keep going. The only risk would have been lost time if the trouble up ahead on the expressway was not that bad. I talked it over with my wife and seriously considered continuing along the path of my GPS until God spoke. He said, “Follow the signs.” The roads still looked clear and my GPS did not indicate any accident. Hence, there was no evidence of any traffic problems other than what we could read on the signs.

Thankfully, I’m not that much of a risk-taker so I got off at the next exit. Only then did my GPS update to show the major accident and subsequent traffic challenges. In addition, only after I got off the exit could I see the standstill traffic up ahead. I thanked God that I followed the signs and did not rely only on what I could see with my eyes or my GPS device. God used that situation to help me understand how to present this chapter since I was working on it at the time. God uses signs to help us make good decisions when we’re confused or overwhelmed with uncertainty. However, we must follow them even when our natural senses don’t support what they say.
