Initiating Conversations With God

Welcome to Part 25 of this blog series on The Will of God. If you don't know God's Will for your life or you're afraid to find out, this blog series is for you. For Part 24, "Learning God's Voice Through His Written Word" click here. Today, we will focus on Point 2 of 7 listed in "Developing The Art Of Hearing From God"

Talk to God first then wait for His response.

Habakkuk 2:1-2(KJV) - I will stand upon my watch, and set me upon the tower, and will watch to see what he will say unto me, and what I shall answer when I am reproved. 2 And the Lord answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it.

Do you know that you could initiate conversations with God? Since you need to hear from Him more than He needs to hear from you it's your responsibility to be proactive. This is why it is important for you to have a secret place where you meet with God (Psalm 91). Long before you develop proficiency in hearing His Voice consistently throughout the day you need to learn how He sounds in the silence of your secret place. Why? If your days are anything like mine they are full of distractions so it's much more challenging to hear God in the midst of the noise.

Today, my goal is to demystify the concept of conversing with God. Any Christian who believes The Bible should know that we're supposed to do so. If you don't know how to communicate with God you probably won't know when He's communicating with you. If you set aside a time and place to meet God He will show up all the time on time to meet you. If you don't show up He'll be right there waiting. Even after Adam and Eve sinned in Genesis 3:8-9 God showed up for a walk through The Garden during the cool of the day and questioned their absence.

James 1:5-8(NKJV) - If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. 6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

As our Heavenly Father, God appreciates the legitimate questions of His children. If you really need to know something and ask God you should expect an honest response. Sometimes, due to human nature people underestimate how much God is interested in every aspect of our lives. Some are taught that God is only interested in "important" issues while He's indifferent to minor issues. Also, others are taught that God is only interested in "spiritual" things. Well that's simply not true. If you need wisdom on anything The Bible says you can ask God.

It's crucial to approach God with the little things first because that's how you strengthen your ability to hear His Voice. It's part of the tuning process for your spiritual ears. You can afford to make a few mistakes with the little things as you get better at it over time. So don't wait until you need a "life or death" answer to approach God for the first time. Approach Him now with whatever is on your mind. He's more interested in quality time with you than anything else.

Initiating Conversations With God

Philippians 4:6-7(NLT) - Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.

Prayer is really a conversation with God. You say what you need to say and God says what He needs to say. If you make time to talk to God you should also make time to hear His response. Nonetheless, it's not always so simple. Even though it's easy to pray when you know what to pray what do you do when you don't know?

When things get rough in your life, prayer opens the door for The Prince of Peace to enter your situation. However, unless prayer is your lifestyle it won't be easy to pray in an emergency. In situations of heightened stress you will have to quiet the internal noise in your heart and mind so that you can hear God's Voice clearly. Develop a pattern of prayer during peaceful conditions so when your life is in turmoil you will still be able to pray.

Romans 8:26-27(NLT) - And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God’s own will.

Have you ever been in a situation in which you know you need to pray but you don't know where to start? Maybe you're in an extremely emotional state and you just can't seem to put the words together. Even if you try to pray you won't make any sense because you can hardly even think.

One of the top reasons why many Christians don't pray effectively is simple. We don't know what to say. Thankfully, we have The Holy Spirit who prays on our behalf. Now that doesn't mean we don't have to pray anymore. It just means we have to change the way we pray. Since we don't know what to say we have to let The Holy Spirit do the talking.

Initiating Conversations With God

1 Corinthians 14:2,13,14(NLT) - For if you have the ability to speak in tongues, you will be talking only to God, since people won’t be able to understand you. You will be speaking by the power of the Spirit, but it will all be mysterious.....So anyone who speaks in tongues should pray also for the ability to interpret what has been said. For if I pray in tongues, my spirit is praying, but I don’t understand what I am saying.

I don't know what you've been taught about speaking in tongues but if you've chosen not to do so you are missing out. When you speak in tongues you speak directly to God. Also, when you speak in tongues you do so by the power of The Holy Spirit which means speaking in tongues is an example of The Holy Spirit praying through you. Therefore, if you need an answer from God you can actually speak the answer through your own mouth by speaking in tongues.

Let me show you one tried and true way to make this work by using an example from my own life. I speak in tongues on a regular basis. Early in the morning I like to put aside time to speak mysteries into the atmosphere around me by the direction and inspiration of The Holy Spirit. Once I'm done, I ask The Lord to give me an interpretation according to 1 Corinthians 14:13. I then go about my day knowing that He will release understanding of the mysteries I have spoken.

For the rest of the day, The Lord speaks to me. At random times I will hear solutions to problems I have been facing even when I'm not consciously thinking about them. While I sit at work I suddenly hear God's Voice explode in my heart with all kinds of revelations from the scriptures. It's a simple case of sowing and reaping. When I pray in tongues I sow seeds of wisdom in the morning and when I hear God's Voice I reap the harvest throughout the day.

If you initiate a conversation with God, He will respond. Try it for yourself! It works. We'll be back tomorrow for Point 3.
