Ask Donnell - How Do I Get Over A Broken Heart?

Ask Donnell - How Do I Get Over A Broken Heart?

We received the following question;

"I feel so broken. I was totally manipulated into entering a relationship with this "Christian" guy in college. I always felt a little uneasy about him but he got me when he used The Word of God to gain my trust. I thought we had something special until he kept pressuring me to give up my virginity. Eventually, against my own conscience I obliged. Big mistake! Soon after finally taking this precious gift from me he skipped town leaving me high and dry. I can't believe I fell for that trap.

Now I feel lost. How could I have been so wrong? It's been three long years since it happened but I just can't seem to recover. Now I work long hours to numb the pain and I don't have much of a social life. It also severely affected my walk with The Lord. I only recently started attending a new church but I'm struggling to even fit in there. Please help me to understand what I'm going through and what I need to do?"

Ouch! That was low. I'm so sorry you went through that. It's been three years but broken hearts sometimes do take a while to heal. Hindsight is 20-20 so it's safe to assume that you've already rehearsed in your mind exactly where you went wrong in this situation. Hence, we won't dwell on the past because you don't need to be reminded of what you already know. However, let's take a quick look at two scriptures before we move on.

Matthew 7:21-23(KJV) - Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

A man who pressures you to commit fornication with him is a worker of iniquity. Quoting scriptures and using Christian jargon means nothing. Even the devil quotes scriptures. There will be many people who will stand before Jesus and get rejected even though they looked very religious during their time on earth. If you want to recognize a true man of God I'll give you a simple test. Romans 14:21 says "It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything else if it might cause another believer to stumble." Any man who claims to be a Christian but encourages you to blatantly sin against God is not a man of God because he doesn't have The Father's heart. He doesn't love you because God is love and causing someone else to stumble does not please God.

On the other hand, Hebrews 10:24(NLT) says, "Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works." A man of God will motivate you to do what is right. He will push you to be a better Christian than you already are. When it's time to make the tough decisions, does he choose God's way or his way? More importantly, when it's your turn to make the tough decisions what does he encourage you to do? Obey God or sin?

Even if a man of God is struggling in his own life he will encourage you to do what's right. He might be going through a tough season in his life but he understands his responsibility to push you in the right direction. He's not going to misrepresent God in the life of someone he loves. Sadly, it's Father's Day this weekend and many people are hurting because their father has been a huge disappointment. In many cases, a man they thought was a man of God turned out just to be a man. Don't let that happen to your children.

Let's now deal with the matter at hand. How do you recover from a broken heart?

Ask Donnell - How Do I Get Over A Broken Heart?

This is deep, very deep. Thankfully, God's love goes even deeper. It sounds like you were really in love with this guy and he abused your trust. Depending on how strong your feelings were it does take a long time to get over a broken relationship. That's especially true when you give up something precious like your virginity. I've heard it said that the giving of your virginity is really the cutting of a blood covenant.

It's used by God to form a permanent bond between a husband and wife. Therefore, when done right that first sexual experience causes a strong connection between a married couple that's not easily broken. However, even when things are done the wrong way, God can still restore because nothing is impossible with God. He has the power to completely heal you.

How Do You Get Over A Broken Heart?

Step #1 - Forgive the person who hurt you! (Matthew 18:21-35)

Matthew 18:21-35(NLT) - Then Peter came to him and asked, “Lord, how often should I forgive someone who sins against me? Seven times?” “No, not seven times,” Jesus replied, “but seventy times seven! “Therefore, the Kingdom of Heaven can be compared to a king who decided to bring his accounts up to date with servants who had borrowed money from him. In the process, one of his debtors was brought in who owed him millions of dollars. He couldn’t pay, so his master ordered that he be sold—along with his wife, his children, and everything he owned—to pay the debt. “But the man fell down before his master and begged him, ‘Please, be patient with me, and I will pay it all.’ Then his master was filled with pity for him, and he released him and forgave his debt. “But when the man left the king, he went to a fellow servant who owed him a few thousand dollars. He grabbed him by the throat and demanded instant payment. “His fellow servant fell down before him and begged for a little more time. ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay it,’ he pleaded. But his creditor wouldn’t wait. He had the man arrested and put in prison until the debt could be paid in full. “When some of the other servants saw this, they were very upset. They went to the king and told him everything that had happened. Then the king called in the man he had forgiven and said, ‘You evil servant! I forgave you that tremendous debt because you pleaded with me. Shouldn’t you have mercy on your fellow servant, just as I had mercy on you?’ Then the angry king sent the man to prison to be tortured until he had paid his entire debt. “That’s what my heavenly Father will do to you if you refuse to forgive your brothers and sisters from your heart.”

You have to forgive before you can truly live. The first step to get rid of a person from your heart is to forgive. When you don't forgive people you hold them in prison in your heart and carry them around with you. They may have moved on with their lives but you're still dragging them around. If you're ready to be free, you have to forgive him and let him go. He's taken enough of your time and energy. Forgive him for what he did to you and forgive yourself for letting him do it. It's over now. You have to keep moving forward with your life. Don't give someone from your past the power to control your future.

Step #2 - Protect your heart!

Proverbs 4:23(NKJV) - Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life.

Protect your heart! If you keep rehearsing your heartbreak you won't get over it. If you keep reminding yourself of him you won't be able to move forward. Now let's be real! How does anything get into your heart? It comes in through your eyes, ears and life experiences. Some people like to keep mementos from past relationships but in this case, that's a bad idea. If you want to move on from someone you have to remove everything that has to do with that person from your life. If he gave you gifts get rid of them. If they're valuable you can re-gift them. If they're not, throw them away.

If you had a favorite song, erase it from your Ipod. If you had any favorite spots you used to visit, thou shalt visit those places no more. Erase his number from your phone. Un-friend him from Facebook. Don't follow him on Twitter. Take his photos out of your photo album, etc, etc. You get the point. He's made you history so make him history!

Step #3 - Don't be lonely! (Ecclesiastes 4:7-12)

Ecclesiastes 4:7-12(MSG) - I turned my head and saw yet another wisp of smoke on its way to nothingness: a solitary person, completely alone—no children, no family, no friends—yet working obsessively late into the night, compulsively greedy for more and more, never bothering to ask, “Why am I working like a dog, never having any fun? And who cares?” More smoke. A bad business. It’s better to have a partner than go it alone. Share the work, share the wealth. And if one falls down, the other helps, But if there’s no one to help, tough! Two in a bed warm each other. Alone, you shiver all night. By yourself you’re unprotected. With a friend you can face the worst. Can you round up a third? A three-stranded rope isn’t easily snapped.

You'll never make it alone. Human beings crave relationships. The worst thing you can ever do with a broken heart is spend most of your time alone. Loneliness will only exacerbate the problem. You'll end up thinking about that guy over and over. When a relationship is broken it's okay to grieve for a while but once you've grieved enough you need your friends. If you have any, go hang out with them.

Do not isolate yourself. If you don't have any, ask God to show you where to find some. Psalms 68:6 says that He puts the solitary in families. Proverbs 18:24 says that a man who has friends must show himself friendly. If you need friends you sometimes have to come out of your shell and make some.

Step #4 - Forgive God! (James 1:17)

James 1:17(NLT) - Whatever is good and perfect comes down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow.

All God's thoughts toward you are pure and loving so why should He suffer for something He didn't do? When your ability to serve God is affected by someone else's actions you are making God pay for that person's shortcomings. That guy broke your heart and walked away so you have good reason not to have any relationship with him. However, what about God? Why won't you serve Him with all your heart?

Why won't you love Him? What did He do wrong? Forgive God and rekindle your relationship with Him on the level it needs to be. He didn't break your heart. The Church is The Body of Christ. When you make His Church suffer you're doing it to Him. God did not put you in that situation and neither did His Church. So don't let your relationship with The Lord suffer any longer. He deserves your best.

Step #5 - Draw closer to God!

Psalm 147:3(KJV) - He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.

Luke 4:18(KJV) - The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,

James 4:8(KJV)) - Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.

God is not the problem! He is the solution! When people let you down your best response is to run hard after God. Your heart is safe in His hands. Not only will He fix your broken heart, He will restore your life. So after you completely cleanse your heart of that guy fill it with God. There is no such thing as an empty heart. You have to fill it with something or someone and God is the best option. He has a bigger, better plan for you. Your plan didn't work so now it's time to try His own. Go hard after Him and watch what will happen!

Step #6 - Pray for the person who hurt you! (Job 42:10)

Job 42:10(KJV) - And the Lord turned the captivity of Job, when he prayed for his friends: also the Lord gave Job twice as much as he had before.

When Job forgave his friends and prayed for them God turned his life around. They let him down when he really needed them but he still prayed. God honors a move like that. You might not be able to do it now but once your heart is ready you can ask The Lord to have mercy on that guy and forgive him. Jesus forgave the people who crucified Him and to say that things turned out alright for Jesus is a major understatement. Why not do the same?

In Acts 7:60, Stephen followed the example of Jesus and also forgave the people who stoned him to death. Jesus was so proud of Stephen that He got off His throne and stood on His feet in heaven according to Acts 7:55. Just like Jesus, Stephen prayed to The Father and asked Him to forgive the people. There's no forgiveness like asking God to extend forgiveness to someone for doing you wrong. That's taking it to the next level. You might want God to strike that guy with lightning but it's not your job to convince God to do so. Ask God to forgive him. Romans 9:18 says that God will have mercy on whoever He chooses. Hence, it's up to Him who He will punish and who He will pardon.

Step #7 - Cut the soul ties!

Hebrews 4:12-13(NKJV) - For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.

The Word of God is truth according to John 17:17 and the truth makes you free according to John 8:32. Emotional ties to a person are not easy to break especially those that are enhanced by a sexual union. Fortunately, the truth of God's Word will get the job done. It takes the supernatural power of God to completely free you and God's Word is supernatural. Soul (mental and emotional) ties can be wedged so deep in your heart that even when you think you're over a person you're not. Thankfully, the scalpel of God's Word can get to the depths of your heart and surgically remove every remnant of it.

2 Corinthians 10:3-6(NKJV) - For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled.

A soul tie is a stronghold in your heart so the next thing you need to do is rebuke every soul tie that was formed. Once you've forgiven you're ready for this step. The weapons God gave you include The Word of God, The Name of Jesus, The Blood of Jesus and The Power of The Holy Spirit. In the name of Jesus declare that soul tie broken and take authority over the emotional stronghold in your heart. Invite The Holy Spirit into the situation and ask Him to bring you liberty from it. Declare yourself healed by the stripes of Jesus and accept no condemnation because of the blood of Jesus.

Last but not least, start meditating on specific scriptures that build you up and allow them into your heart. Believe them, start declaring them over your life and start doing whatever they say you need to do. Here are some examples;

Psalm 139:14(NKJV) - I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well.

John 8:36(KJV) - If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.

Romans 8:1(KJV) - There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

2 Corinthians 3:17(KJV) - Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.

1 John 1:7(KJV) - But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

Psalm 23:1-6(KJV) - The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

In sum, you can't control how long it will take for you to completely recover from a broken heart but at least you could help the process along. God bless and keep you!

The Power Of Doing God's Word

Unleashing The Power Of God's Word

Today's blog is a sample from my upcoming book.

The Power of Doing God's Word

Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.
James 1:21-25 NKJV

The Word of God is much easier said than done. It's easy to talk about what God's Word requires of us. It's easy to quote scriptures. It's easy to shout “Amen” in response to good preaching. It's even easy to point fingers at someone else for not living up to the standard of God's Word. What's not so easy is carrying out The Word of God in your own life. It's a whole lot harder than it looks on paper.

In the parable of the builders, Jesus was careful to say that the type of foundation necessary to withstand the storms of life is not determined by anything but adherence to His Word. That's important because even though hearing or knowing The Word of God is great until it is put into action a foundation has not been built in the life of a Christian. Therefore, a man who hears The Word without doing it is as unstable as a man who didn't hear it at all.

Unfortunately, that explains why some “seasoned” Christians fall on the day of temptation. They may be experienced at attending church or even talking about the scriptures but lack the necessary experience of living them out on a daily basis. The Church is built on the rock foundation of Jesus Christ and He is The Word of God. During His time walking the earth as a man, He issued a simple challenge; do what He says and you'll survive the storms of life. Take the challenge today.

For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food. For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
Hebrews 5:12-14 NKJV

For many years I used this scripture at my annual conference in Trinidad. Out of it came the confession; “Lord, strengthen my teeth so I can eat this meat.” I always thought I understood what it meant until The Cracked Door Conference 2013. As usual, on the first night of the conference I led everyone in the confession and gave the following typical explanation.

Those who are unskilled in explaining and understanding the scriptures are babies regardless of how long they've been in church. On the other hand, those who are skillful in explaining the scriptures are mature. The babies can only handle milk because of the level of their understanding while the mature Christians are ready to eat the meat of the Word. So I challenged everyone to strive for maturity.

That night, The Lord corrected me and told me to pay attention to exactly what the scripture says. I looked a little closer and after almost a decade of misinterpretation He opened my eyes. The mature Christian is the one whose senses are exercised because of using The Word of God. Maturity is not about explaining or merely understanding The Word of God.

Maturity is about using The Word of God to make the right decisions in life. Anyone who does not exercise The Word is still a baby and does not qualify to teach others. Therefore, the only way I can qualify to teach God's Word is if I know what it says, understand it and use it in my life. I should be so skilled in living by God's Word that my senses are conditioned to make the right choices. I no longer struggle to make the right decisions because I know by experience what God requires of me.

We covered the first step to discovering your purpose; The Universal Will of God. Enjoy!

Before you can consider God's specific purpose for you it would be wise to understand His Universal Will for all mankind. Why did God create humanity and what does He want all of us to do during our time on the earth? Discover this and you are one step closer to your destiny. God's specific plan for you is just part of His overall plan for humanity.

I said unto the fools, Deal not foolishly: and to the wicked, Lift not up the horn: Lift not up your horn on high: speak not with a stiff neck. For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south. But God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another. Psalm 75:4-7 KJV

When God is ready to promote someone He makes it happen. That's great news because God is a righteous judge. If you feel like you've been unfairly overlooked for promotion, have no fear, The Lord is here. If you're stuck where you are and can't seem to shake free He knows how to force the process. He has more authority than the highest ranking person in your company. Everyone at work might answer to the big boss but even he has to answer to God.

Not only does God promote certain people but He also demotes others. Jesus said; “But many that are first shall be last; and the last shall be first.” (Matthew 19:30 KJV) This is the reality of God's Kingdom. God has ultimate authority and even if things seem to be unfair right now, the time is coming when He will set things right. Hence, you want to always be in His Will so that you're in position to be on the right side of His righteous judgment.

And afterward they asked for a king; so God gave them Saul the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years. And when He had removed him, He raised up for them David as king, to whom also He gave testimony and said, ‘I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My own heart, who will do all My will.’ From this man’s seed, according to the promise, God raised up for Israel a Savior—Jesus— Acts 13:21-23 NKJV

Have you been praying for promotion or exaltation? Have you been desirous of a clear path to the top? Do you want to be considered for eternal rewards and heavenly promotion? Let's see how it works in God's Kingdom. Why did God put Saul down and replace him with David? Why was David handpicked by God for the highest position? What does The Bible say in Acts 13:22?

David was a man after God's own heart and because of that God knew that He could trust David to carry out His Will on the earth. Can the same be said of you? Can God handpick you for promotion and exaltation in His Kingdom? God won't promote someone to run anything on this earth for Him if the person is not going to carry out God's agenda.

The world's system promotes those who carry out their agenda so if you are depending on the world for promotion then you need to get with their agenda. However, just like Saul, every single king that has been promoted by this world will be thrown down and replaced by those who have been chosen by God.

Is It Necessary To Discover Your Purpose?

Because of God’s grace to me, I have laid the foundation like an expert builder. Now others are building on it. But whoever is building on this foundation must be very careful. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one we already have—Jesus Christ. Anyone who builds on that foundation may use a variety of materials—gold, silver, jewels, wood, hay, or straw. But on the judgment day, fire will reveal what kind of work each builder has done. The fire will show if a person’s work has any value. If the work survives, that builder will receive a reward. But if the work is burned up, the builder will suffer great loss. The builder will be saved, but like someone barely escaping through a wall of flames. 1 Corinthians 3:10-15 NLT

The moment is coming when every person will have to answer to God for the work they did on earth. Will your work survive the fire? Jesus said, “For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?” (Mark 8:36-37 NKJV). It would be really unfortunate to work hard all of your life doing something that God does not recognize for eternity.

Just think about it. You can live a full life on the earth during which you give your time and energy to noble endeavors. In the case of 1 Corinthians 3:10-15, you're a builder who invests decades in teaching people from God's Word. Due to negligence or maybe ignorance you teach at a level below God's expectations and your work doesn't survive the fire. That would be so devastating.

The only assurance God gives to you or a person in this case is salvation. That's because at the very least you attempted to carry out God's Will but you just didn't do it right. Not doing God's Will at all is a completely different story with much more dire consequences according to Jesus in Matthew 7:21-23. Thus, you should make up your mind to do God's Will and to do it just the way He wants it done.

There are many plans in a man's heart, Nevertheless the Lord's counsel — that will stand. - Proverbs 19:21 NKJV

God has a plan and you have a plan. God has veto power but you don't. If your plan doesn't line up with His plan He can choose to override you. If that happens, all of your efforts outside of His Will would be completely wasted. Even if you have good intentions, God does not support anything outside of His Will for your life.

Hence, discovering God's Will is a necessity and not a luxury. The man who knows God's Will has a distinct advantage over the man who does not. The former is capable of living efficiently because he can narrow his focus to exactly what he's supposed to do with his life. That helps him to easily recognize and eliminate distractions. Are you that man?

The Body Has Officially Launched!!

Are You Doing God's Will For Your Life? (An excerpt from my upcoming book)

"Not everyone who says to Me,'Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. Many will say to Me in that day, 'Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?' And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!' Matthew 7:21-23 NKJV

Two of the deepest questions on the hearts of every human being are; "Who am I?" and "Why am I here?" Regardless of what you accomplish during your time on this earth if you never get the answers to these two questions a void will remain in your life. The day is coming when each person will be judged by one single criterion; The Will of God.

Did you or did you not do The Will of God for your life? That is the question. Hopefully, your response will not be, “Oh wow! There's a Will of God for my life? What's that about?” Especially after you have finished reading this book, that would be unacceptable. At the very least you will know that one exists and there are simple steps you need to take to discover it.

Many will stand before Jesus on the Day of Judgment and list out their accomplishments assuming that He will be impressed. However, Jesus says that only those who do The Will of His Father in Heaven will enter The Kingdom of Heaven. Therefore, Jesus is not impressed by what you do if what you do is not The Will of His Father for you.

If God is the owner of the earth and you are the steward He placed here to run it when He returns don't you think He will care about what you did? Of course He will. In fact, every human being is sent to earth for a specific period of time with a very specific purpose that fits into His grand plan. If everyone does their part it will all work smoothly.

For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing. - 2 Timothy 4:6-8 NKJV

At the end of your days on the earth you should be able to say with confidence that you finished your purpose and are prepared to transition into eternity. God's overall plan spans tens of thousands of years from the day He created Adam and Eve to the day Jesus returns as The Resurrection (John 11:25). He divided the plan into progressive seasons which build upon each other.

This is your season. Your contribution is like one piece in a huge jigsaw puzzle. By itself, it seems insignificant but it's value is only appreciated when it's in place. The Apostle Paul was the perfect example of a man who lived with purpose. From the moment Jesus changed his name and called him into the ministry in Acts 9 he was unstoppable.

You can make many plans, but the Lord's purpose will prevail. - Proverbs 19:21 NLT

Don't waste your life! If you come up with your own plan and don't do what God put you on the earth to do you will waste your entire life. That's a scary but true reality. God has already set a purpose for you and discovering it is all you are expected to do. It's a perfect fit for your season on the earth so get with it while you still have time.

Each person's purpose is unique and tailored to fit. Once you understand this, it will be virtually impossible for you to completely pattern your whole life after anyone else. You are a designer's original and God is counting on you to deliver. Like the story of Jonah in The Bible even if you rebel against God's purpose He knows how to redirect your life. How then do you discover your purpose? Join The Body and find out. 🙂

How Do You Get Consistent Results From God's Word?

This is a continuation from yesterday's blog; "Ask Donnell: How Do I Get Rid Of Doubt From My Life?" If you haven't done so already be sure to read it first because today we're building on what was discussed yesterday.

Ephesians 5:25-27(KJV) - Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

It's time for The Church to become brain-washed not with lies or deceptive worldly wisdom but with the truth. If your mind is stained with doubt it's time for you to wash it clean with the faith that comes from God's Word. If your mind is stained with fear it's time to wash it clean with the love of God that's shown through His Word. If your mind is full of unbelief it's time to become inspired to believe using God's Word. It's time for your life to become glorious. Every spot, every wrinkle, every blemish has to go. It's time to wash your brain clean so that you can be presented to Jesus. May the brain-washing begin now!

Matthew 13:23(NKJV) - But he who received seed on the good ground is he who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and produces: some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.”

In the Parable of The Sower (Matthew 13:1-23), Jesus outlined four types of soil which each gave different results when seed was sown into them. Three were unfruitful; wayside, stony and thorny while only good ground was fruitful. If taken literally, each time the seed is sown only 25% of the soil is good enough to reap consistent results. Jesus explained that soil represents the human heart and seed is The Word of God. He also made it clear that this parable is the foundation of all other parables. Therefore, it's important for us to completely grasp what He said.

A heart that is good ground should be the ultimate goal of any Christian who hears God's Word. When your heart is good ground your faith won't get short-circuited by doubt. As a result, you will be able to live a fruitful life. Today, let's study the Biblical principles for consistent results from God's Word. We'll start by stating the obvious then we'll see where The Holy Spirit takes us from there.

How Do You Get Consistent Results From God's Word?

1) Position Yourself to Receive God's Word!

1 Peter 2:2(KJV) - As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

Job 23:12(KJV) - Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.

Matthew 4:4(KJV) - But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

This might seem obvious but it cannot be ignored. The first step to reaping a harvest is sowing. Hence, you can only see the fruit of God's Word in your life if the seed of God's Word has been sown into your heart and cultivated over time. Sometimes, Christians get frustrated by the lack of results in their lives yet they don't deposit enough of God's Word in their heart to expect results in the first place. Let's do a little test.

Today, estimate how much time you spend feeding your spirit with God's Word and compare it to the time you spend feeding your mind and body with anything else. For instance, if you spend 15 minutes reading The Bible, 3 hours watching non-Christian television, 3 hours listening to secular music, 3 hours on Facebook, 3 hours eating, etc., etc. your spirit is starving while your flesh is yawning because it's so full it needs a nap. Don't let your spirit remain hungry for God's Word when you know you need it to survive. There are innovative ways to get God's Word so take advantage of as many as you can. Here are some ideas.

When you first wake up in the morning grab a good Christian book and The Bible for an early morning spiritual breakfast. If you have a long drive to work, find a Christian radio station in your car. If you're riding the train and you have a smartphone, read this blog on your phone. 🙂 (I had to stick it in there somehow.) LOL! If you have an opportunity during your day chat about the things of The Lord with someone else. Stream worship music on your computer.

Romans 10:13-17(KJV) - For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report? So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

You need to hear God's Word so that you can walk in faith. What you don't hear you can't believe. So do yourself a favor and hear from God whenever you get a chance. Fill your day with good thoughts from His Word and before you go to sleep grab that good Christian book and The Bible again for a late night spiritual snack. Keep sowing The Word of God into your heart. It's your only chance to get any results from it. It can do nothing for you if it stays written on the pages of The Bible. It must be written on your heart.

How Do You Get Consistent Results From God's Word?

2) Ensure That You Get A Proper Understanding of God's Word!

Nehemiah 8:8-9(KJV) - So they read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading. And Nehemiah, which is the Tirshatha, and Ezra the priest the scribe, and the Levites that taught the people, said unto all the people, This day is holy unto the Lord your God; mourn not, nor weep. For all the people wept, when they heard the words of the law.

Understanding God's Word is so beautiful that it can bring you to tears. These people finally understood what God was saying and it caused them to weep. God sent Nehemiah, Ezra and the Levites to teach them all they needed to know. In other words, they believed because they heard and they heard because there were preachers. Thankfully, there are preachers all over the world now. However, how many people sit in churches every week and say; "Amen! Hallelujah! Preach!" yet they have no idea what the preacher is saying?

Proverbs 3:13(KJV) - Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding.

I'm a happy man. Why? I find wisdom and I get understanding. I want to share this happiness with you too. Jesus clearly stated in Matthew 13:23 that the man whose heart is good soil is the man who hears The Word of God and understands it. Do whatever it takes to understand God's Word. If you hear something at church or read a scripture and don't really get it, ask God for wisdom according to James 1:5-8. He'll either tell you directly, show you where to look or provide someone who has the answer. Don't forget that a person who doesn't understand God's Word cannot hold on to it when the enemy shows up to snatch it away.

3) Bear Fruit By Doing What The Word Says!

Luke 6:43-49(NKJV) - “For a good tree does not bear bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. For every tree is known by its own fruit. For men do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they gather grapes from a bramble bush. A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks. “But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say? Whoever comes to Me, and hears My sayings and does them, I will show you whom he is like: He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it, for it was founded on the rock. But he who heard and did nothing is like a man who built a house on the earth without a foundation, against which the stream beat vehemently; and immediately it fell. And the ruin of that house was great.”

The seed is The Word of God. The heart is the soil. So what is the fruit? The fruit is the resulting action. It's the visible, external end result of the process that started with a seed that was sown in obscurity. Jesus said that good soil is the heart which bears fruit and produces after The Word of God is sown. You begin to bear the fruit of God's Word when you hear it, understand it and last but not least, do what it says. Once you do what it says the power of God is released for supernatural victory in your life. All three are necessary for you to be well established in God's Word and live a productive life.

James 1:21-25(NKJV) - Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.

You don't get blessed from God's Word until you do it. Hearing it is only step one. Understanding it is only step two. There's one more step to go. It's time to do God's Word. Faith without works is dead.

Just a reminder. If you haven't done so already, you have a few days left to be part of the first group to join The Body. 🙂 See below.

Ask Donnell: How Do I Get Rid Of Doubt From My Life?

This is a continuation from Friday's blog; "Ask Donnell: What Is Doubt And How Do I Get Rid Of It?"

We received the following question from Roshawn;

"Good night Donnell,

I need to have a clear understanding of doubt from this perspective; Jesus spoke of us being able to move mountains if we don't doubt and we will have what we desire (Mark 11:22-24); the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much (James 5:16); all things are possible with God and we will do His works and greater works (John 14:12); and much more.
Jesus resurrected Lazarus so the disciples will believe. If a believer believes and wishes to do the same must he first get such an instruction from God? If he says "I believe God has given me the power through the Holy Spirit to do the same, so I will pray for person X to be resurrected" but then says in the blink of an eye, "- but I wonder if this is God's Will?" Is this doubt? And did he just blow the opportunity for the miracle to be performed? And finally how do you get rid of doubt from your life? - thanks Donnell"

Once again, this is a very deep and challenging question. However, the wisdom of God is available to us if we ask according to James 1:8. Therefore, we can find the answer to anything. I hope you took the time to read the previous response in detail because I won't repeat anything that was said before. We'll just build on the foundation that was set and move forward.

The first step to addressing any issue is to diagnose it. We have to understand what we're dealing with before we can present a comprehensive solution. That's the approach doctors use for their patients or mechanics use to fix cars. Doubt can be a very complex issue but we will make it as simple as we possibly can. Last Friday's response was the diagnosis so now let's move on to the solution.

How do you rid your life of doubt?

Let's first get an understanding of where doubt comes from so that we can stop it right there. I once sat under a prominent Bible teacher who described doubt as taking the second thought. Your first thought may be one of faith but when a contradictory second thought arises it's called doubt. For instance, have you ever thought about doing something but before you could take one step you came up with all kinds of ideas about why it would never work? That's doubt! You had a thought but instead of acting on that thought you let other thoughts stop you.

Thoughts are images in your mind which come from things you've seen, heard or otherwise experienced. The more you see, hear and experience things of a consistent nature the more your thoughts are reinforced in that particular area. Your thoughts can also be strengthened without additional outside influences when you rehearse them over and over in your mind. If particular thoughts are reinforced consistently both by outward and inward reinforcement they will eventually become mental strongholds. These are difficult to break once established. That's where the problem of doubt really lies. Let's dig into this a little deeper.

Matthew 13:18-23(NKJV) - “Therefore hear the parable of the sower: When anyone hears the word of the kingdom, and does not understand it, then the wicked one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is he who received seed by the wayside. But he who received the seed on stony places, this is he who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; yet he has no root in himself, but endures only for a while. For when tribulation or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he stumbles. Now he who received seed among the thorns is he who hears the word, and the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and he becomes unfruitful. But he who received seed on the good ground is he who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and produces: some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.”

In a nutshell Jesus explains how this entire system works. There are three main reasons why you can receive a Word of The Lord and not see any results. There are also three main reasons why you can receive a Word of The Lord and see results.

How Can Doubt Steal The Word of God?

1) The Wayside: You don't really understand The Word of God you believe!

1 Peter 3:15(AMP) - But in your hearts set Christ apart as holy [and acknowledge Him] as Lord. Always be ready to give a logical defense to anyone who asks you to account for the hope that is in you, but do it courteously and respectfully.

If someone questions what you believe and you cannot defend yourself, look out because The Word of God in your heart has fallen by the wayside. It's only a matter of time before it is snatched right out of your heart. If you don't really know what you believe you cannot hold on to it. If you don't really know why you believe what you believe you cannot hold on to it. The truth is that the enemy always shows up with a contradictory thought whenever you receive a Word of God. Hence, if your thoughts concerning a particular Word are not well established you cannot hold on to it. All he has to do is say something different to make you question what you believe and you're done. Here's the perfect illustration;

Genesis 3:1-7(NKJV) - Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?” And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden; but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.’” Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings.

Eve knew what God said but she didn't fully understand it. Therefore, all the enemy had to do was confuse her a little by twisting God's Word. You can read the story for yourself. He took God's Word and changed it around so that Eve would doubt what God said. Once she began to question her understanding of God's instructions she was finished. Adam was no help either. This is the first lesson in The Parable of The Sower. If you don't understand God's Word the enemy will try to confuse you by twisting it a little making you doubt the truth you already know.

2) Stony Places: The Word of God is not established in your heart!

Matthew 13:20-21(NKJV) - But he who received the seed on stony places, this is he who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; yet he has no root in himself, but endures only for a while. For when tribulation or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he stumbles.

It's easy to get excited about a Word of God. You might read a scripture about raising the dead once and in a fit of excitement think you can immediately walk into a funeral and raise someone. The excitement is real but if you don't see immediate results you'll start to doubt yourself. Why? You are not yet established in that Word. It might be in your heart but it has no deep roots.

If The Word of God is not reinforced you won't be able to hold on to it when you face the heat. Your faith must be able to endure the challenges of life so that you don't lose God's Word from your heart. Life is hard. For you to remain faithful to God under pressure you have to ensure that your thoughts are entrenched in The Word of God.

Your faith needs to be built up until God's Word becomes a stronghold in your mind that cannot be broken. What does that mean? Wherever you need your faith to be built you should meditate on scriptures which address that area. On a practical level that means reading, speaking, listening, discussing and thinking about these scriptures as often as possible. Once you understand them you need to put them into practice. The more you practice doing The Word the stronger your faith will develop. You can start in small areas of your life but you have to start doing it to be established in it.

You cannot just hear a message on Sunday and hold on to it all week without reinforcing it. You cannot read a scripture once and have enough faith in it to hold on when you are persecuted. After you hear it the first time you have to study it over and over until you program your mind to think like the scripture. There's nothing in your life that will last if you only hear or see it once. The more you study it the better. The more you read it the better. The more you listen to it the better. The more you live it the better. That's the only way for the seed of God's Word to take root in your heart. There's no other way to protect it from the harsh conditions of life. Here's an example of this case;

Matthew 14:25-31(NKJV) - Now in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them, walking on the sea. And when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out for fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid.” And Peter answered Him and said, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.” So He said, “Come.” And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus. But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!” And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”

Peter heard one Word; "Come!" He got excited, stepped out the boat and started walking on water. As you can see, one Word from God is all you need to step out in faith. However, establishment of that Word is what you need to consistently walk in faith. Peter was excited but he was not established. Therefore, he could not continue in faith when he noticed what was going on around him. A man is not supposed to walk on water but God has power over all creation. Therefore, even though Peter knew the truth, he had to struggle against reality and that's where doubt came. Stepping out in faith is just the beginning, walking in faith is what you have to do every day after that first step.

Ask Donnell: How Do I Get Rid Of Doubt From My Life?

3) Thorns: The Word of God is Contradicted By Other Voices!

Matthew 13:22(NKJV) - Now he who received seed among the thorns is he who hears the word, and the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and he becomes unfruitful.

Thorns choke God's Word. They are thoughts that contradict God's Word. They come from the world and have one goal, destroy the work of God in your life. Let's break this down. Your heart is the soil within which certain types of seeds grow. Any images, words or experiences that enter your heart whether positive or negative are the types of seeds that will begin to grow. Therefore, when the seed of God's Word enters your heart if you don't guard it from contradictory seeds they will all grow together and compete for your attention.

Proverbs 4:23(AMP) - Keep and guard your heart with all vigilance and above all that you guard, for out of it flow the springs of life.

Philippians 4:8(NKJV) - Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.

1 Peter 2:11(NLT) - Dear friends, I warn you as “temporary residents and foreigners” to keep away from worldly desires that wage war against your very souls.

Be very careful what you let enter into your heart. It's those things you see, hear and experience that do not agree with God's Word which turn into weeds. If the weeds are more established in your heart than God's Word they will overwhelm and kill The Word. In fact, if there are already weeds waiting in your heart before God's Word even enters it The Word won't stand a chance. If you hear the truth of God's Word and instantly question it or struggle to believe it your heart is full of well established weeds.

Have you ever seen weeds grow so much that they become strong with deep roots that are almost impossible to remove? That's what it looks like when negative thoughts become strongholds in your mind. You can't just cut them down, you have to dig deep into your heart to remove them. You then have to protect your heart from any more of their seeds. If you don't want to battle certain thoughts you have to cut off every influence that feeds those thoughts into your heart. Thoughts don't become strongholds by chance. You have to open your heart and let them in. If you stop them before they get into your heart you won't have to fight them later.

2 Corinthians 10:4-6(NKJV) - For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled.

When you find yourself doubting God that means there are thoughts already in your mind which oppose God. These are the types of weeds Jesus was referring to. Strongholds are the most well established thoughts. You can't continue to function with those opposing thoughts in place because they will short-circuit your faith the same way weeds kill young plants. God has provided us with specific weapons for pulling down these strongholds. We'll get to those weapons now.

Ephesians 6:17(KJV) - And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;

We have only one offensive weapon and it's The Word of God. Here's how it works. You have to use the truth of God's Word like a sword to cut down deeply entrenched thoughts. You then have to allow The Word to go deep into your heart and uproot the lies of the enemy that have become established. Meditation is the only way to get The Word of God deep into your heart. The more you drive that Word down into your heart the deeper it will go.

John 8:32, 36(KJV) - And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free..... If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.

John 17:17(KJV) - Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

You also have to open your heart to The Word for the meditation to be profitable. If The Bible gives you the truth you have to be willing to accept it and the only way to do that is to do what it says. It's a long process but if you open your heart and fill it with enough of God's Word you will see your life change. It's the only way you get lasting change in your thought life. Don't resist what God's Word says, just accept it and watch it work. The truth will make you free if you choose to accept it.

Doubt is a weed. Kill it with the truth of God's Word! Cut it down with the truth of God's Word! Uproot it with the truth of God's Word! Replace it with the truth of God's Word! We'll continue with more on that tomorrow... By the way, if you haven't done so already, join The Body. See below.
