Who Are You, Holy Spirit?

Who Are You, Holy Spirit?

After The Resurrection of Jesus, God's interaction with mankind changed. He was no longer physically present on the earth as a man but on The Day of Pentecost, we got something even better. He moved inside of every Christian and forever, there would never be a separation between His people and Himself. Maybe it's time He got the attention He deserved. Welcome to your encounter with The Holy Spirit.

Acts 2:16-18(NLT) - No, what you see was predicted long ago by the prophet Joel: ‘In the last days,’ God says, ‘I will pour out my Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams. In those days I will pour out my Spirit even on my servants—men and women alike—and they will prophesy.

Baptize my heart with your fire, your desire
I don’t want to be offended when it’s all coming down
I pledge my allegiance to Jesus

In Genesis 1:2, facing an empty, shapeless earth, The Holy Spirit moved. In Genesis 1:3, after the movement of His Spirit, our Father in heaven declared His light into the thick darkness. Following this pattern, Joel prophesied the circumstances around which the final spiritual awakening will take place on the earth. At The Body Church we are currently in the middle of an intense study of The Holy Spirit. Without question, this series is bringing radical change to our lives.

Here's an excerpt from The Mysterious Kingdom of Heaven.

Understanding the Importance of the Holy Spirit

Colossians 1:15-22(NLT) - Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation, for through him God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth. He made the things we can see and the things we can’t see— such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world. Everything was created through him and for him. He existed before anything else, and he holds all creation together. Christ is also the head of the church, which is his body. He is the beginning, supreme over all who rise from the dead. So he is first in everything. For God in all his fullness was pleased to live in Christ, and through him God reconciled everything to himself. He made peace with everything in heaven and on earth by means of Christ’s blood on the cross. This includes you who were once far away from God. You were his enemies, separated from him by your evil thoughts and actions. Yet now he has reconciled you to himself through the death of Christ in his physical body. As a result, he has brought you into his own presence, and you are holy and blameless as you stand before him without a single fault.

The message in the opening line of Colossians 1:15-22 is very substantial. It basically states that Christ is the physical manifestation of all that is God. Therefore, as Jesus told Phillip and the other disciples in John 14:8-10 seeing Him was the same as seeing The Father. However, once Jesus physically left the earth and returned to heaven, He sent The Holy Spirit and this is what I need to deal with now. The Father sent The Son to set everything up for us up for our destiny and The Son left The Spirit to guide us through the entire process. If we don’t see The Holy Spirit as equal to God, we’ll completely underestimate our Christianity.

Many members of The Body of Christ wish they could have been alive during the days when Jesus walked the earth. They cannot conceive anything greater than sitting at His feet, conversing and sharing their lives with Him. It’s definitely a valid desire that we should all have but there is a dilemma here. Didn’t Jesus say that He would return to earth as The Holy Spirit? Didn’t He say that He would not leave us as orphans as the earth yearning for His presence? Didn’t He promise to never leave us alone? So why are we wishing for something that we already have?

John 14:11-17(NLT) - Just believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me. Or at least believe because of the work you have seen me do. “I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father. You can ask for anything in my name, and I will do it, so that the Son can bring glory to the Father. Yes, ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it! “If you love me, obey my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you.

Why desire an opportunity to walk with Jesus like the disciples when you have the opportunity to have Jesus live inside of you? That’s the reason why Jesus said that we could do even greater works than He did. He said specifically that it’s because He was going to The Father. Why is that important? He went to The Father and sent The Holy Spirit. He was with the disciples before He died and rose again but was in them after. With this understanding, we can ask anything in His name and He will do it. That’s His guarantee. It only makes sense when we see the relevance of The Holy Spirit. We can’t think of Him any less than we think of Jesus Christ, our hero who died on the cross for our sins.

In fact, since I’m on this issue, let me share something else. How do you think Jesus was capable of rising from the dead? Yes, I agree with The Apostle Paul’s statement in Galatians 1:1 that The Father raised Him up. On the other hand, since The Father remained in heaven throughout the entire progression of The Resurrection of The Son, how do you think He got the job done? When you discover the answers to questions like these in the scriptures, your perception of who you are in Christ must change.

Romans 8:11(NLT) - The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you.

Jesus was The One who rose from the dead but it was The Holy Spirit who raised Him up. He is the same Holy Spirit who lives inside of every Christian. Accordingly, as much as we marvel at the thought of Jesus Christ destroying the work of the enemy, we must marvel that The Father thought us worthy enough to do the same. The thirty three years Jesus spent walking the earth as a man were an example of what we can do when we rightly discern the Holy Spirit. The disciples didn’t have an advantage over us. They just understood what we struggle to understand. When Jesus walked the earth they looked to Him to do everything they needed but once they received The Holy Spirit God could do all He desired through them.

The Holy Spirit has everything we could ever desire from God because He is God. The Mystery of The Trinity is that The Holy Spirit can live inside of us while Jesus and The Father are seated on thrones in heaven. Whatever you can imagine Jesus doing in your situation if He was going through it you can do it yourself. If Jesus can conquer the most powerful foes and escape every possible trap of the enemy so can you. If Jesus could call legions of angels at will, so can you. If Jesus could speak a Word and see deliverance, so can you. Nothing ever stopped Jesus from operating in the fullness of God’s authority but unbelief. So if you have The Holy Spirit inside of you and you’re being stopped then you know what’s stopping you.

James 1:22-25(NLT): “But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like. But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it.”

You have two choices. You can marvel at this Heavenly Wisdom and walk away unchanged or you can make the decision to change your life. As you look into the mirror of the scriptures you can see the difference between God’s image and your image. Anywhere you see a discrepancy it is your responsibility to adjust. God’s not going to change to match what you look like because you should be an exact replica of Him. Genesis 1:26 opened our eyes to the truth of our creation in God’s image and likeness. Therefore, I can’t say enough that anything outside of God should be purged from inside you.

The Holy Spirit is more than a speech therapist who teaches charismatic Christians to speak in tongues. He is more than the energy that causes excited people to dance around during worship services or inadvertently jerk their shoulders when they “feel the power.” He is the personification of Christ and the same way He entered the physical body of Mary to produce Jesus He entered your body when you accepted Jesus into your heart. In Hosea 4:6, God laments that His people are destroyed for a lack of knowledge. That's why a continued rejection of knowledge will position every Christian for destruction. Therefore, follow the directions of Peter 5:8 and be alert to what God’s Word says about The Holy Spirit because the enemy is looking for ignorant Christians to destroy.
